Saina Nehwal maintained her status of being the top badminton player of the country, with the elimination of PV Sindhu in the previous round of the tournament but she succumbed to defeat in yet another semi-final round at the Malaysian Open 2016. She lost against Tai Tzu Ying, This was her straight sixth loss to Ying. Saina, who was awarded with the Padma Bhusan just a month back, went down 13-21, 19-21 in just 34 minutes. This is the third consecutive defeat for Saina in the semi-final stage of the tournament as she had also repeated it in the Indian Super Series and Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold. Ying has turned out to be a nemesis for Saina as she previously defeated Saina in the All England Open 2016 Quarterfinal and the BFW Super Series in Dubai and she will be hell-bent to break the deadlock of the semi-finals at the Singapore Open Tournament scheduled to start from September 12. Ying will face Thailand’s Ratchanok Intarnon in the Women Single final category of the tournament. The Thai Shuttler got past the experienced Wang Yihan of China 21-11, 21-19 to enter the finals. While in the men’s category Lee Chong Wei underlined his clear intentions of winning the grand tournament when he demolished his opponent with a 21-7 and 21-14 score line against Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark and win his record 11th title and the match just needed 35 minutes to show the brilliance of Wei. And he will face Chen Long, the world No 1 and its going to be a cracker of a match with both the aces trying to give it a go for the trophy. In the Men’s double, South Korean fifth seeds Kim Gi-jung-Kim Sa-rang came up big to topple compatriots and top seeds Lee Yong-dae-Yoo Yeon-seong 21-16, 21-12.
