Why the official football league of India will remain mediocre in quality if it does not incorporate more businesses? “The best way to avoid disappointment, is to not expect anything from anyone.” I-League, India's premier and most coveted football tournament, year after year, renders this quote to be truer.
Founded as the “ONGC I-League” in 2007, it has since then seen a topsy-turvy ride, mostly on the sadder side, to reach the stage it is at right now. Since its inception, Dempo has won the championship 3 times, with Churchill Brothers following suit with 2 titles. In 2014, Hero took up the sponsorship rights. Ten Sports noticed the apparent potential of the league and hence decided to take charge of its broadcasting and coverage. So if the history of these significant clubs is intact, sponsors are on the roll and there is exponential craze in Indian football fans, then where is the I-League going wrong?

Yuvraj Singh has been ruled out from the remaining matches of the WT20 and it comes as a serious blow for team India just before the semi-final against West Indies on 31st March 2016. Yuvraj has been an integral part of the team since making his comeback to the International Cricket in T20 Series against Australia.
Yuvraj Singh’s performance in the series may not have been extra-ordinary but he has played his part as an all-rounder and a mentor for the young Indian Squad pretty well. His contribution has been very crucial in crunch situations as we saw in the games against Pakistan and Australia where he provided the stability to the line-up when wickets were falling quickly. In both the matches, he built crucial partnership with Virat Kohli to seal the team through to victory. Yuvraj Singh has always been a player of tough character and we saw that in the match against Australia as he played through the pain after hurting his ankle during the game. The injury couldn’t stop him from making his contribution in the game and setting up the path towards victory for team India as they defeated Australia by 6 wickets to book a place in the Semi-Final against West Indies. Yuvraj played his part with the ball too as he slowed down the run rate of Australia and bowled with an economy of 6.33 as well as picking up the crucial wicket of Steve Smith. How many of us were aware that on 19th of March 2016 our women’s cricket team took on Pakistan women’s team in the afternoon at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium, New Delhi? The very same day when our men’s cricket team took on their men’s team in the evening at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. I think very few people were aware about it, isn’t it sad?? For long, the Indian women’s cricket team have been living in the shadows of the more fancied men’s team, all the while, silently outperforming their opponents, achieving good results and coming out on the top more often than not. The only difference between men’s and women’s team is simply the attention or the lack of it, that the women cricketers face.
In a country where a large number of people are obsessed with cricket, it comes as a big surprise that not many are aware of the names of the cricketers in the women’s team, with India hosting the 2016 edition of World Twenty 20, both men’s and women’s matches will be played simultaneously. But there hasn’t been much publicity surrounding the ladies tournament, the only bright spot was when they got to pose alongside their popular counterparts, during the official unveiling of the team India jersey. |
