One of the things that we can learn from Fernando Torres is how injuries can have a huge impact on one’s career. From being one of the best players in the world to becoming just an ordinary player; from being compared to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to continuously becoming one of the flops of the season each year- Torres has been there. It has been a sudden decline in form since the knee surgery he underwent back in 2010. Since then he has struggled at Liverpool, Chelsea, AC Milan and is currently on loan at his boyhood club Atletico Madrid. In the current season, he has scored just 6 goals in all competitions, a figure that is far too low for a striker playing for a club that is one of the dark horses (if not the favourites) in the Champions League. Despite his poor form, he continues to be an important part of the Atletico Madrid squad, with his heroics for the club in his youth making him a fan favourite in this part of Madrid. The fans’ love for him goes to an extent that they wanted the club to sign him even when he looked way past his prime and was miserably struggling for goals at Chelsea and later in AC Milan. He scored his 100th goal for the club in February this year in a 3-1 win against Eibar. Recently, he even made his 300th appearance for the club, marking the occasion with a goal as the los rojiblancos ran out 3-1 winners against Valencia. Known to get into goalscoring positions and making runs behind the defenders, el nino has struggled with his shooting with his accuracy continuously declining. He tends to miss open goals and sitters that should be put away. Sometimes it is hard to believe that he’s the same footballer who used to be a nightmare for some of the best defenders and goalkeepers in the world! Torres is currently on loan till the end of the season at Atletico but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the los rojiblancos sign him on a permanent basis given that he is fan favourite and his experience can help mould talented young strikers like Luciano Vietto and Angel Correa into becoming great in the future. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him go to USA, China or Qatar in the near future, following the footsteps of stars like David Villa, Frank Lampard, Xavi and so on. He may be way past his prime but for all that he has achieved in his career, el nino is still considered a star and has a huge fan following. His signing would be considered a great commercial move for clubs in the MLS or the Chinese Super League. author
